Mat vs floating foundation

One-line orientation

Mat and floating foundations can look similar because both use large slabs on weak soil. A mat foundation spreads the building load over a wide area. A floating foundation removes enough soil that the building adds almost no net load.

Key points

  • Mat / raft foundation:
    • One thick, heavily reinforced concrete slab under the whole footprint.
    • Mechanism = spread the load over a large area to lower bearing pressure.
    • Suited to heavy loads, uneven or low-bearing soil, and closely spaced columns.
  • Floating (compensated) foundation:
    • Designed so the building’s weight ≈ the weight of soil removed to place it — so little or no net weight is added to the site (a buoyancy / compensation idea).
    • Used on weak or expansive soils where traditional foundations would settle unevenly or heave.
    • Typically a reinforced concrete slab spreading the weight over a large footprint to minimize differential settlement.
  • Relationship: floating is usually executed as a mat slab (commonly set below grade so there is excavated soil weight to offset). Mat = the form; floating = the load strategy.
