An accessible toilet room needs clear space at the toilet, a separate wheelchair turning space, correctly placed grab bars, and a workable corner layout.

Key points

Clearance at the water closet:
- 60 inches wide, measured from the side wall.
- 56 inches deep, measured from the rear wall.
- Keep other fixtures out of this area so the user can approach and transfer, with room for a caregiver to assist.
Turning space in the room: the toilet room must also contain a wheelchair turning space — a 60-inch circle (2010 ADA value; 67 inches under ICC A117.1-2017, the edition IBC 2021 references) or a T-turn.
Toilet position: the toilet is placed in a corner so that the two adjacent walls can carry the required grab bars — a side bar (along the long wall) and a rear bar (behind the toilet).
Grab-bar heights: horizontal grab bars are mounted at 33–36 inches AFF. Vertical grab bars are positioned to allow grip at varying heights for transfer assistance.
Accessible lavatory: must have knee clearance underneath (no cabinet blocking roll-up access). The rim height, controls, and mirrors must fall within the accessible reach range (15–48 inches AFF for controls).
Shower / tub controls: mounted at 38–48 inches AFF to be reachable from a seated position and from outside the spray zone.
Dispensers and accessories: soap dispensers, paper towel dispensers, and similar items must also fall within the 15–48-inch reach range.

Exam pitfalls

Two different clears, both required. The water closet gets a 60” × 56” clearance free of other fixtures, and the room must still inscribe a turning circle (60” ADA / 67” A117.1-2017). A room that is long but narrow can satisfy the strip beside the toilet and still fail because the turning circle does not fit.
Grab bars at 33–36 inches are lower than you expect. Handrails are typically at 34–38 inches; grab bars at the toilet are at the lower end (33–36”) to assist the transfer motion. The numbers are close enough to produce exam traps.
The corner position is functional, not aesthetic. Placing the toilet in the corner is the only geometry that allows both a side bar and a rear bar to anchor to solid walls. A toilet floating away from both walls cannot meet the grab-bar requirement without specialty blocking.
Lavatory knee clearance is a roll-up requirement. The standard clear-floor space for a forward approach to a lavatory is 30 x 48 inches (2010 ADA; 30 x 52 under A117.1-2017), and the under-counter space must be open (no base cabinet). Designers sometimes add a cabinet for storage and inadvertently block the wheelchair.
