Water pressure, sources, and distribution: the 0.433 formula and building type differences

Water pressure is a function of height — the 0.433 formula is the entry point for every supply-sizing question, and building type (small vs large, municipal vs well) determines how that pressure is managed.

Key points

  • Pressure formula: P (PSI) = 0.433 × H (ft) — where H is the vertical height of the water column above the fixture. The constant comes from water density (62.4 lb/ft³ ÷ 144 in²/ft²), and is fundamental to sizing supply lines and specifying pressure-reducing valves.
  • Typical pressures:
    • Municipal supply at the meter: ~50 PSI
    • Fixtures need the flow pressure listed for that fixture. Under the IPC, 15 PSI is one fixture-table value, not a universal system minimum.
    • The IPC generally requires pressure reduction where static pressure exceeds 80 PSI.
  • Water sources:
    • Municipal (public) supply — standard for most urban/suburban buildings; enters at a meter with a shutoff valve.
    • Private well — used in rural or off-grid settings. Pump type and location depend on the well depth and system design; deep wells may use an above-grade jet pump or a submerged pump.
  • Distribution by building type:
    • Small buildings — cold water flows directly from the main; a water heater (gas, oil, or electric) provides hot; two pipes (hot + cold) serve each fixture group.
    • Large buildings — same two-pipe concept but requires a larger, more complex system that may include pressure-boosting pumps, pressure-reducing valves (PRVs), and zone distribution.
  • Supply–drainage separation — potable and wastewater never meet; enforced by:
    • Air gap: physical space between supply outlet and highest possible water level
    • Vacuum breaker: mechanical device preventing back-siphonage

Water pressure falls as elevation rises. Boost pressure when the available pressure cannot meet the fixture’s required flow pressure, and reduce static pressure above 80 PSI under the IPC.
