One-line orientation

An egress door must let people leave without a key, tool, or special knowledge. When the code’s occupant-load or hazard triggers apply, it must also swing in the direction of egress travel.

• Swing direction: egress doors swing in the direction of egress travel so occupants pushing toward the exit can’t bind the door shut. Triggered at an occupant load of 50 or more served by the door, or any Group H occupancy.
• Operability from the egress side: the door must be openable without a key, tool, special knowledge, or special effort, in a single releasing motion. This applies to all doors in the egress path.
• Panic hardware: push-bar hardware that releases on a single push; required on latched doors serving Group A or E spaces with an occupant load of 50 or more, and in Group H. On fire-rated doors the listed equivalent is fire exit hardware.
• Swing intrusion: an open or swinging door must not block more than half the required egress width, and a fully open door must not project more than 7 inches into it.
• Width/landings: the door’s clear opening and its level landings must preserve the required egress width on both sides.
