The four enclosure control layers: water, air, vapor, thermal
One-line orientation
An enclosure has to control four things at once — bulk water, air, vapor, and heat — and the key tested distinction is that the water-resistive barrier, the air barrier, and the vapor retarder are three different jobs, not one membrane.

- The four control layers (each must be continuous across the whole skin):
- Bulk water (rain) control — the largest, most damaging load, handled in three lines of
defense:
- Rain screen: outer face/cladding that sheds most direct water.
- Drainage plane: the path that redirects water getting past the rain screen back to the exterior.
- Water-resistive barrier (WRB) / water control layer: the primary moisture barrier — peel-and-stick membranes, liquid-applied systems, or building wraps.
- An air barrier stops air from leaking through the enclosure. OSB can be part of that system only when the panel, seams, penetrations, and transitions meet the required air-tightness.
- Vapor control — a vapor retarder slows vapor diffusion through materials (its own card).
- Thermal control — insulation controls heat flow (its own card).
- Bulk water (rain) control — the largest, most damaging load, handled in three lines of
defense:
- Plan a drying path: design the assembly to dry inward, outward, or both, as appropriate. Keep every control layer continuous at corners, openings, and penetrations.
- Air vs vapor are different mechanisms: air leakage moves moisture in bulk (whole air masses); vapor diffusion moves it slowly through materials. Air leakage usually moves far more moisture, so the two are handled separately.
