Earth retention and shoring: soldier-beam-and-lagging, sheet piling, slurry wall

Shoring holds an excavation’s soil faces in place. It is usually temporary but may remain as permanent work when designed for that service. Soil, groundwater, and the intended permanent use guide system selection.
Key points
- Shoring supports trench or excavation sides where the cut cannot be safely sloped back. It is most often temporary but may remain as permanent work when designed for that service.
- Soldier beam & lagging: vertical steel beams (soldier piles) at intervals with horizontal lagging placed between them top-down. Suited to firm, drier soil; the lagging is not watertight.
- Sheet piling: interlocking sheets driven into the ground form a near-continuous wall. The joints resist water better than lagging but can still leak. Sheet-pile walls may be temporary or permanent when designed for the intended service.
- Slurry wall: a trench is excavated while kept full of bentonite slurry that holds the sides open; reinforcing + concrete are then placed. Works in soft soil / high groundwater and can become a permanent basement wall (“produces occupiable spaces”).
- Related ground treatment — soil mixing: stabilizing soil in place by mixing it with cementitious material (a stabilization technique alongside true shoring walls).
