Electrical switches: poles, throws, 3-way, and 4-way configurations

One-line orientation

Switch terminology — poles, throws, 3-way, 4-way — describes how many circuits a switch controls and from how many locations; the exam focuses on which combination covers a given control scenario.

Key points

  • Poles — how many circuits:
    • Single-Pole (SP): controls one circuit (e.g., one set of lights on/off).
    • Double-Pole (DP): controls two separate circuits simultaneously (two sets of lights, or a 240V load where both hots must break).
    • Triple-pole (TP): controls three circuits (less common in residential exam questions).
  • Throws — how many output positions:
    • Single-Throw (ST): two positions — on or off. A standard wall switch is SPST.
    • Double-Throw (DT): connects the input to one of two different outputs; enables circuit sharing between two paths (used in 3-way and 4-way switching logic).
  • 3-Way Switch:
    • Controls one fixture from exactly two locations.
    • Requires two 3-way switches, one at each location — no 4-way needed.
    • Typical applications: top and bottom of a stair, each end of a hallway.
  • 4-Way Switch:
    • Allows control of one fixture from three or more locations.
    • Wiring pattern: 3-way → [4-way(s)] → 3-way.
    • Each additional control location beyond two requires one additional 4-way switch inserted between the two 3-way ends.
    • Typical applications: long corridors, large rooms with multiple entries.
