Water distribution in supertall buildings: gravity downfeed vs zoned system

how water is lifted, fed, and divided into pressure zones. A downfeed system can also use multiple zones with intermediate tanks or PRVs.

Key points

  • Why special distribution is needed: street municipal pressure (~50 PSI) has a theoretical zero-pressure lift of about 115 ft, and practical usable reach is lower once friction losses and minimum fixture pressure are included. Tall buildings therefore require pumping, and they generate dangerously high static pressure at lower floors (P = 0.433 × H).
  • Gravity downfeed system:
    • Water is pumped to rooftop storage tanks; gravity feeds water down to all floors.
    • gravity supplies pressure after pumps have lifted the water to the tank.
    • Limitations: heavy structural load concentrated at roof; pressure-reducing valves (PRVs) required at lower floors to reduce the high static head.
  • Zoned water distribution system:
    • Multiple intermediate tanks placed at different heights; each tank serves a limited stack of floors (“zone”).
    • Water is pumped in stages from zone to zone.
    • Advantages: consistent pressure across all floors; distributes structural load rather than concentrating it on the roof.
    • Limitations: more complex piping and controls; more pump equipment to maintain.
  • Pressure-reducing valve (PRV): limits downstream pressure regardless of inlet pressure.
    • Minimum flowing pressure — about 15 PSI
