Exit stairs: enclosure, handrails, guards, geometry

One-line orientation

An exit stair is a protected, fire-rated route between floors. Code controls its enclosure, risers and treads, handrails, and guards; handrail height and guard height are easy to confuse.

Key points

  • Enclosure: an exit stair is a fire-rated assembly — walls, doors, floors, and ceilings all rated: 2-hour where the stair connects four or more stories, 1-hour where it connects fewer than four (IBC 1023.2).
  • Pressurization: required to keep smoke out in tall or underground buildings; fresh air holds the stair above the pressure of adjacent spaces.
  • Length: an exit stair’s run length is not limited by code the way travel distance is — it must simply lead to a safe discharge.
  • Geometry: 7-inch maximum riser and 11-inch minimum tread.
  • Handrails: continuous and graspable, 34–38 inches above the tread nosing, with extensions12 inches (one foot) beyond the top riser and one tread depth beyond the bottom riser.
  • Guards: 42 inches minimum to prevent falls, with openings that reject a 4-inch sphere.
  • Width: typically 44 inches minimum, adjusted for occupant load and sprinkler status.
  • Door swing: stair doors swing in the direction of egress (see the egress-doors card).
