Fire-resistance ratings of building elements (Table 601)

One-line orientation

IBC Table 601 is the lookup that converts a building’s construction type into the required fire-resistance rating (hours) of each structural element — it is the starting point for every “how many hours does this need?” question on the exam.

Key points

  • What Table 601 sets: the minimum fire-resistance rating, in hours, required for the building’s primary elements — structural frame, bearing walls (exterior/interior), nonbearing walls, floor construction, and roof construction.
  • Read it by construction type. The columns are the IBC construction types (I–V). Pick the type, then read the required hours element by element.
  • Higher type → higher required ratings. Type I is the most fire-resistive (highest required hours); Type V is the least. Protection increases as you move toward Type I.
  • Different table for occupancy separation. Required separation between different occupancies comes from IBC Table 508.4, not Table 601.
  • Protect openings through a rated wall. Ducts, doors, pipes, and joints must use the protection required for that wall and penetration. Firestop systems match the wall rating; doors and dampers use their own listed ratings.
