An accessible route is a continuous, unobstructed path connecting accessible elements. Remember which condition each dimension serves: 36-inch passage, 32-inch brief pinch point, 60-inch turn, and 30-by-48-inch clear floor space.

Key points

• Accessible route principle: to be “accessible,” a space must be reached by a continuous, unobstructed path tied into the building’s main circulation — from entrances to restrooms and other key areas. Break the chain and the element is not accessible.
• Passage width:
  • 36 inches minimum clear width for a general passageway.
  • May narrow to 32 inches only at a short pinch point, ≤24 inches in length.
• Turning space: 60-inch (5-foot) turning circle for a 180° turn, or a T-shaped turn where a circle won’t fit. (2010 ADA value; 67 inches under ICC A117.1-2017 — see below.)
• Clear floor space: 30 × 48 inches for one stationary wheelchair — used at seating, areas of refuge, fixtures, and alongside desks/counters. (2010 ADA value; 30 × 52 under A117.1-2017.)
• Approaching a niche / alcove:
  • Forward approach: at least 36 inches.
  • Parallel approach: at least 60 inches to maneuver alongside.
