Escalators: specifications, arrangements, and design rules

Escalator design is defined by four standard specifications and two arrangement types — the exam tests whether you can select the right arrangement for a given building flow and recall the key dimensions.

Escalator arrangements:
Two main arrangement families control how up and down runs are positioned relative to each other.

Criss-cross (most common):
- Up and down escalators overlap in plan — efficient use of floor area.
- Two sub-configurations:
- Spiral (criss-cross): the rider exits and makes a simple U-turn to the next escalator.
- Walk-around (criss-cross): the escalators are offset so the rider must walk horizontally to reach the next escalator after reaching the landing.

Parallel:
- Up and down escalators run side by side in the same direction, but in separate floor openings.
- Space: stacked parallel and criss-cross arrangements can both fit within a two-escalator width, while a parallel spiral arrangement uses four runs.
- Two sub-configurations:
- Parallel spiral: continuous movement by turning at the landing.
- Stacked parallel: requires walking around to continue; suited to minimal connections between floors.
