Roof slope and how slope is achieved

One-line orientation

Roofs are sorted by slope into low-slope (membrane) vs steep-slope (lapped coverings), and the key tested idea is that even a “flat” roof must be pitched enough to drain.

Key points

  • Slope thresholds:
    • Low-slope (“flat”) roof: less than 2:12, but kept above roughly 1/4:12 so it still drains.
    • Steep-slope roof: greater than 2:12 — sheds water and snow quickly.
  • A “flat” roof is never dead-level. A minimum pitch is designed in to move water to drains; standing water (ponding) adds load and shortens membrane life.
  • Three ways to create slope:
    • Slope the structure — tilt the whole deck/structural plane.
    • Taper the structure — use framing members of varying depth to build the fall.
    • Taper the insulation — keep the deck level and lay wedge-shaped (tapered) rigid insulation to form the slope under the membrane.
  • Drainage (low-slope):
    • Primary + secondary (backup) drains — redundancy in case the primary clogs; the backup sits slightly above the primary so it only acts on overflow.
    • Overflow scuppers — through-wall openings at a parapet that let excess water escape if drains back up.
    • Crickets — small sloped diverters that route water around penetrations/curbs.
    • Drain parts: strainer (debris), hub/clamp (secure the drain), drain pipe (carries water away).

Below about 2:12 is low-slope membrane; above 2:12 is steep-slope shingles or tile.
