CMU and grouting
One-line orientation
A concrete masonry wall is a kit of hollow units, bedding mortar, flowable grout, and reinforcing — and the exam tests the size/type vocabulary plus the constant mortar-vs-grout and low-vs-high-lift confusions.
Key points
- Size: the most common CMU is 8” × 8” × 16” nominal. The actual unit is smaller than nominal (commonly by 3/8”) so that unit + mortar joint equals the nominal module.
- Moisture types: Type I = moisture-controlled (limits shrinkage/cracking); Type II = no moisture-content control.
- Grades: Grade N — load-bearing, below- and above-grade; Grade S — load-bearing, above grade with weather protection or indoors.
- Density classes: ASTM CMU density classes are normal-weight, medium-weight, and lightweight. Lighter units reduce dead load and improve thermal performance.
- Mortar vs grout (high-yield):
- Mortar beds and bonds the units — it lives in the joints.
- Grout is concrete-like but with higher water content for pourability (Portland cement + aggregate); it is poured into the cells to fill voids and add structural strength.
- Reinforcing: horizontal = welded-wire joint reinforcement in the bed joints; vertical = rebar in cells that are grouted solid. A horizontal bond beam (a course of grouted, reinforced units) ties the wall together and distributes loads.
- Grouting techniques: low-lift = grout poured in increments (typically not exceeding ~4 ft) to control hydrostatic pressure; high-lift = poured at greater heights for taller walls, reducing pour cycles.
